Mexican Coca-Cola glass bottle

Where to Buy Mexican Coke in a Glass Bottle

You can buy Mexican Coke right here. We carry the 12 oz glass bottle, sweetened with cane sugar.

A bottle is 150 calories, 39 grams of sugar, and 34 milligrams of caffeine.

When bottling started in Mexico

Bottling in Mexico began in the 1920s. Arca Continental, one of the Mexican bottlers, was founded in 1926 and was the first Coca-Cola bottler there. People have been opening Coke bottled in Mexico for about a hundred years.

Not every Coke sold in Mexico today is cane sugar alone. Some of it is sweetened with sugar and corn syrup together. The bottle on our shelf is the cane-sugar glass one.

When corn syrup came in

For a long time, Coca-Cola in the U.S. was sweetened with sugar. Sometimes cane. Sometimes beet. Either way, it was sugar.

In 1980, Coca-Cola USA let U.S. bottlers replace half the sugar with high-fructose corn syrup. The New York Times wrote about it that February. By November 1984, the Times reported that Coke and Pepsi would use still more corn syrup in their U.S. colas.

It did not flip in one day. It moved over a few years.

Why the glass bottle feels familiar

The draw is the older sweetener in the old glass bottle. The glass gets cold. The cap comes off with a little hiss. It feels like a soda from a cooler on a hot day, back when a bottle was a small treat.
